Holidaying in Lanzarote

There has been so many enquiries from followers about my recent trip to Lanzarote, that I have decided to write a travel blog post on it because I know how hard it can be to choose the right holiday destination, especially with children. So here is a full honest review about our visit to the Canaries. (This is not a sponsored post)

Our Booking
Our decision to go abroad with the kids was very much last minute! We only booked it in June to go away on 31st July for one week. We booked Gran Castillo, Tagoro Resort in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote and we booked it through Trivago. We have stayed in the Princess Yaiza Hotel a few years back and we really enjoyed it and Lanzarote itself, so we decided to return but we had heard so many excellent reviews about Gran Castillo that we decided to book that Resort instead.

Our Arrival
On arrival to the Resort, which is about a 25 minute drive from the airport, we were very impressed. The entrance to the hotel was beautiful and the staff at reception couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly. They arranged the concierge to put our bags into the golf buggy and he drove us to the door of our room so we didn’t have to carry the bags in the heat. As he drove us around to our room he gave us a little tour of what facilities were available. Really lovely touch!

Our Accommodation
Our Children are ages 12 and 17, so we needed a big enough accommodation, as they wont share a room. So we booked a duplex room, 2 bedroom, 2 bathrooms with sitting room that has a double pull out bed.

The master suite upstairs was absolutely huge, with super kingsize bed and massive ensuite with jacuzzi bath. The down stairs bedroom was a good size with ample amount of wardrobe space and double bed. Both bathrooms had amazingly big showers and what I thought was magnificent was that they had all the toiletries you could possible need, even toothbrushes and vanity sets! Both bathrooms also come with hairdryers attached to the wall. All these little extras are great for saving on luggage weight! Also included were bathrobes and slippers! pure luxury! The whole duplex was fully air-conditioned and had tea/coffee units and a mini fridge.

My daughter had the large double bedroom to herself downstairs and my son had the pullout double bed made up in the sitting room, while myself and my husband had the whole top floor to ourselves. Our apartment was cleaned daily and towels replaced with fresh ones. The cleaning ladies even made a fancy design with the bedclothes at the end of the bed! Lovely touch.

The Resort
Where do I even start with this…….. There is an unbelievable amount to do in this resort including a full sized gym, 5D Cinema, Kids Zone club house, multi sports and volleyball courts, Archery, full Spa for adults and a mini Spa for kids, private massage, baby club, adult only zones, sports bar, Italian Restaurant, Chinese Restaurant, 2 shops, Shopping centre right outside the gates, full underground parking and I lost track of how many pools and jacuzzis there actually are!! So lets just say…… No-one gets bored!! No matter what age category!!

The Pools
There are 3 main pool areas with lots of different areas and pools in those areas adding up to 10 pools in total. Kids themed pool, gated Adult only zone pool and the main pool area around the pool bar.

We always went to the main pool area because its where the family Bali Beds were and we hired these for 4 days. The cost €20 per day per bed or you can block book days in advance and save money. We booked for 4 days which cost €55 x2 Bali Beds and it was so worth it. They were reserved, so no rushing down at 8am with towels to get sun beds (everyone did this!!)

When we arrived our Bali bed was made with clean sheets and fresh towels over looking the sea! Absolute heaven. This was the children Bali Bed area but there is adult only zones too. There is also a pool towel service so no need to pack towels in you suit cases. There is also Aqua Aerobics most mornings which I did do a couple of times which was great fun! Pool staff are crazy!!

The Food
Food glorious food!! There is so much choice!!! Honestly, Iv never seen anything like it!! The resort is an all inclusive resort, and the Main Restaurant is set out buffet style for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is absolutely everything you could possible want. The salad bar is so impressive and the meats etc are cooked on front of you!

The restaurant staff are fab and will cook you fresh omelettes every morning and cook you eggs whatever way you like them. There is also an adult only eating are which we ate in most mornings because the kids wouldn’t get out of bed! The food was exceptional and we ate her 5 nights out of 7. All our alcohol was included and the wine was particularly good…. and I’m very finicky about my wine.

We also ate one the Italian and the Chinese restaurant which were both fab, particularly the chicken with black bean sauce from the Chinese! These 2 restaurants have to be booked at reception 2 days in advance.

There was also food served at the Pool bar all day till 6pm. There was fresh sandwiches, toasties, chips, burgers, chicken nuggets, ice-cream, yogurt and fresh fruit….. all inclusive. Some ice creams were an addition charge!

The Bars and entertainment
Every night after dinner we went to the main sports bar where there was different entertainment every night and really good entertainment at that!!!!
The seating area outside the sports bar was magnificent with spectacular views looking over the sea and Island. But be warned… the night time can get a bit breezy and chilly, so bring a cardie or jumper for over you shoulders.
The cocktails were amazing and presented beautifully with a real tropical holiday vibe! The Pina Coladas and Tequila Sunrise were my two favourites!

Outside the resort
We booked some water sport activities with a company called ‘Paracraft Water Sports’ which are based on the Marina in Playa Blanca and in Porto Del Carmen. We booked 2 jet skies one day and Parascending another day! Both were incredible experiences! It was our first time to do both and I’d highly recommend it especially if you have teenagers who want a thrill!! This company were fantastic to deal with and both excursions went perfectly with friendly happy staff! They have a great website and you can book in advance and pick and choose you dates and times to suit you!
We also went to the Play Blanca market down by the Marina! This is well worth a visit!! some amazing stalls with lots of fashion and designer inspired goods!! Great for picking up unusual gifts for home! I even met a lovely Cork lady who has been living over there for 12 years and has a beautiful fashion stall with very unusual reversible skirts!! Needless to say, I came home with one !!

Our Departure
On our last day, our flight wasn’t until 8pm. We had to check out of our room at 12pm. We left our suit cases in our rented car and went to the pool. At 4pm the hotel provided us with a courtesy room, which are purpose built rooms with a couch, and a small shower room with air conditioning. It was fantastic to have because we went to the airport feeling fresh after the few hours in the sun. Another fantastic service that this resort provides. But if I was booking again next year I would get the lunch time flight because your just really hanging around for the day in the heat and we didn’t get home till 1.30am which was tough with work the next day. If I’m not mistaken there is a 12pm flight which would be perfect, meaning you get home to Ireland at about 5pm.

So that was our holiday to Playa Blanca and I am delighted to say that 5 of my followers have booked this resort on my recommendations while I was blog posting on Facebook/Instagram for the week! You will not be disappointed!! I promise you that! We officially had the best family holiday ever!! And even the kids admitted it!! We are already looking into booking again for summer 2018!

This All Inclusive holiday (including alcohol) with a duplex 2 bedroom 2 bathroom for 2 adults and 2 children cost us €2,860 ex. flight with Trivago. Our flights cost us €1,545 including 1 checked in bag. Our car hire cost €237 for a Hyundai Tucson for 7 days and we spent €15 petrol. I cant be anymore transparent than that ;-))

I hope this has been helpful and thank you for all you lovely comments about my holiday wardrobe. I will do a full blog post on that next week.

Happy holiday everyone xxxxxxxxx

Love

Gail
