How To Look Taller

Over the last few weeks, Iv noticed a lot of my clients are asking me the same question over and over again,

“How can I look taller”

So Iv decided to do blog posts on issues I feel are common concerns, that I come across everyday in my job as an image consultant and hopefully you will find this advise useful and beneficial.

Below are 5 ways that will help streamline your shape to look taller and slimmer.

1 – Wear heels

Obvious… Right!! But it is one of the best ways to add height. If you want to lengthen your pins even more, avoid breakage of colour from the hem line down. In other words wear the same colour tights, trousers as your shoes. This colour block effect will elongate your body making it appear taller. If you are going bare legged, choose nude shoes and avoid shoes with ankle straps. Basically the less breakage of colour from the waist down the better!

Now, I know we cant be in high heels and stilettos all the time, so i always opt for a wedge with rubber soles. They are so comfortable and the rubber sole is great for impact resistance, making them comfy enough to walk in all day long. I find the Penney’s ones fantastic and they come in black and nude.

2 – Dress in block colours

As with hemlines and shoes, columns of colour will help lengthen and slim your shape. It doesn’t always have to be black, even though black is slimming, any dark rick colour can be as slimming, such as charcoal, navy, burgundy or dark indigo. Once you have chosen your colour block outfit, add a blazer or cardigan. This will create long panel of colour in centre of your torso, which will give the illusion of length and height.

See example below of how colour blocking can lengthen your shape.

3 – Add vertical detailing

It has been a rule now, forever!! Vertical lines elongate and slims the body, while horizontal lines visually add width and bulk. And it doesn’t always have to be necessary stripes, you can choose micro pleat shirts or a pressed seam in a pair of trousers, can equally be as effective.

4 – Good Tailoring

For me, this rule should apply no matter what look you are trying to achieve. Ensuring clothes fit properly is a must! Particularly if you are petite. Baggy, slouchy clothes will just add bulk. Avoid cropped trousers as it will cut your leg making you look shorter. Ensure blazer and jacket sleeves hit exactly at you wrist, to elongate your arms without any breakage. V-neck tops are great for creating the illusion of a longer torso.

Wear skinny belts as they will define your waist and wont cut you in half like wide ones will, which will make you look shorter.

5 – Up Styles

You can add inches by tying your hair up in a high bun or top knot! You can also add height and volume by backcombing the hair at the crown of the head. Simple but very effective.
