Wardrobe Detox

Step By Step Wardrobe Detox Guide

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, such as opening a door for someone!
So why don’t you do that ‘slightly nice’ little thing for you!
Why not open one of the most important doors in your home….. Your wardrobe doors!!

You can do an act of self improvement by giving yourself a Wardrobe Detox!

A Wardrobe Assessment involves going through all of your clothing, shoes, and accessories and assessing everything based upon your image goals as well as the colour, style and fit of each item.  You then remove the items that no longer suit your body-shape, lifestyle, or style. Then make a shopping list to fill in any wardrobe gaps to complete outfits. Start by following Gail’s Rails 10 simple steps below for a successful wardrobe assessment.

But before you begin your wardrobe detox, it will be more beneficial if you know what body shape category you fall under! There are 5 main body shapes! Apple, Pear, Hourglass, Inverted Triangle and Column.

To make it easier for you all, Ive attached the links below for all the body shapes so you can read through each one and discover the one that best suits you.

Each of these blog posts include the best clothing to choose but also the clothing to avoid. Meaning you can eliminate it from your wardrobe.

Knowing exactly what body shape you are will help you achieve a more successful Wardrobe Detox.

Wardrobe Detox

Step 1 – Ensure you have at least 3 hours to complete the job

Step 2 – You will be removing everything but do it in stages or sections and complete one at a time so you don’t become over whelmed by a mountain of clothes.

Step 3 – Create 5 piles
•Keep
•Alter
•Charity
•Throw away / Recycle
•Sell

Step 4 – Try everything on and ask yourself these questions:
• Does it fit?  (If it’s too tight, either donate or store elsewhere if you think it might fit again soon.  If too loose, consider alterations if you still love the item.)
• Is it flattering?  (Does it highlight the parts of your body you love or draw attention to any areas you might not love as much?)
• Is the colour good for my skin tone?
• Is it age-appropriate?

• Does it fit my lifestyle?
• Have I worn it in the past year?  (In most cases, bar formal wear and a few sentimental pieces, items not worn in over a year should go!)
• Do I feel good when I wear it? Does it make you feel unattractive when you wear it?
• Do I receive compliments when I wear it?
• Would I buy this item today?

Step 5 – Place the charity and recycling clothing in 2 separate bags and remove from the room.

Step 6 – Bag up all the clothes that need altering and remove from the room. Rehang the clothes that are worth trying to sell on the likes of Adverts or Depop and hang them in a spare room or wardrobe.

Step 7 – Invest in some good hangers before you begin your wardrobe assessment and remove all wire hangers from your wardrobe. I recommend the felt fabric feel ones from Dunnes Store and Penneys.

Step 8 – Re-hang all your remaining clothes back in your wardrobe in category’s:
All tops together, jeans together etc. etc.

Step 9 – Arrange the items darkest colours to light with all category’s.

Step 10 – Create a list of items that you need to buy to complete a capsule wardrobe.

Wardrobe Detox

A little tip for Mums with little ones!

Sometimes having 3 hours to yourself to accomplish something as big as this is completely impossible!
I know!! Ive been there! Your lucky to get to the loo on your own, let alone complete a full wardrobe detox.
My advice would be to tackle just one area at a time. So for example… Today tackle your scarf drawer or your sock drawer and that alone will give you a sense of satisfaction. Small stages like this can be done over a couple of weeks and in plenty of time for the spring season.

Now you are left with a clear, well organised wardrobe that makes it very easy every morning to mix and match items to create perfect outfits!
A Wardrobe Assessment may take a lot of time and energy, but the rewards are extremely powerful.
