The Perfect fit

One of the most common complaints that I hear from clients is that they cannot find clothes that fit properly. The majority of people buy their clothes ‘off-the-peg’, which means that garments are made to fit standard shapes and heights. Some manufacturers do make petite ranges but these tend to be for the smaller sizes only, completely ignoring the fact the fuller figured customers can also be short.

Thankfully, lots of fashion ranges are now coming in longer lengths for the taller woman, New Look and ASOS being two great examples.
If a garment is a good staple and of reasonable quality, then it will always be worth investing in alterations to ensure the perfect fit.

Some high end boutiques offer an in-store service, which is great but a good image consultant will always have contact details of a reliable alterations person or tailor to pass on to their clients. For me that is The Zip Yard!

I am a qualified dressmaker and seamstress but don’t practice any more due to other work commitments, that I find far more enjoyable. As the saying goes “Do less with more focus”. So now if my schedule is to busy and I don’t have time to do some of my own alterations, I drop mine into the girls in “The Zip Yard” in Newbridge, Co Kildare. Having used them myself on many occasions means I have full confidence in their work.

All front of house staff have completed a stylist course in body shape and customer styling with Julie Cobbe of Stylefish! Pretty impressive! So you can be guaranteed you will be in safe hands!

Along with standard fabrics, all the seamstresses, in The Zip Yard, have specialised training in Leather, Fur and Bridal! They are also well know for their restructure and restyling of clothing and have featured many times on RTE’s, Today Show and Expose, demonstrating how a simple item can be transformed into something completely different with a real wow factor!
Here are some examples of their spectacular work featured on TV

Typical alterations I would recommend:

For petites, sleeves, jacket lengths and hemlines will almost always need adjusting and can prevent the wearer looking as though they are ‘waiting to grow into their clothes’.

Pear shapes (this is me!) will often have to have the top half of a dress, or the waistband of skirts and trousers taken in, because they may have to go up a size to accommodate the hips and thighs. My advice is, you should always buy garments that fits you biggest area perfectly (ignore the size on the tag!) and then get the other areas that are too large, altered. Also what I do with most of my trousers (not jeans), is stitch up the pockets! If you are a pear shaped body, the last thing you need is extra width, bulk and gapping on trousers around that area. By stitching up the pockets you get a much smoother silhouette.

Every client will have individual requirements and preferences according to their body shape, so I always encourage them to obtain the best fit possible. A good seamstress is worth their weight in gold to give that perfect tailored fit, making that item of clothing look a lot more expensive. I cant speak for every Zip Yard Boutique but if any of them are a reflection on their Newbridge Branch well then you are on to a winner. Jennifer, the Owner, Enda, the Manager and their team of Seamstresses are all fantastic ladies that always welcome you with big smiles and are beyond helpful. But more importantly alter your clothing to perfection and of a very high standard!

So bottom line is to always invest in how your clothes fit! It will absolutely transform how an outfit looks and feels, helping you feel more confident and comfortable.
